A Bit About Me (fashion questionnaire)

A Bit About Me...
A fashion questionnaire
* What magazines/ blogs do you read?
I prefer to watch video essays on many different topics on trends in fashion and beauty. This is usually part of my morning routine or when doing mundane tasks. This way, the information and the opinions expressed seem more like a conversation and I feel part of it. Also, with my dyslexia, I feel that I engage more through this method.

One of my favourite people to watch is Mina Le. Not only does she do commentary on current affairs, she also does deep historical dives and speaks on how the trend came about and the cultural significance behind it. The most recent video I watched was about the history behind certain hats, what they were originally made for, how the style has evolved and how some have changed from masculine origins to now being dominated as a feminine trend. This has informed me on how important headwear is in some cultures which is something i can research deeper when it comes to design.
* What music/bands are you currently listening to?
I listen to a wide range of music including Rock, Soul, alt-indie/soft country, reggae/disco/funk and other sub genres that fit into those categories. Lately, I have been listening to a lot of Sam Phillips, Maggie Rogers, The Velvet Underground/Nico, The Kinks, Talking Heads, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Rolling Stones, Boney M and Blur.
* What is the last book you read or film you watched?
I have just finished watching all of the Indiana Jones films. The third one was my favourite!
* Describe your personal style:
Quite often I prioritise comfort over 'the look'. However, with that being said, I think I have a mixture of styles. I like cottage core clothes because they are cute and comfy. I like the general colour pallet associated with the aesthetic and it allows a range of girly and more tom-boy looking outfits with a hint of lesbianism. I also sometimes embrace more of a grungy look depending on what mood I'm in, alongside dark academia and bohemian aesthetics.
* Which current designers/brands inspire you and why?
From completing my apprenticeship with Mulberry, I have admired a lot of what they do and how they role as a company in general. They give back a lot to their employees from all sectors, from production to head office. They are also putting a lot of things in place to become a lot more environmentally friendly.
Mochipan is someone I have followed on instagram for a while. She makes lots of different garments that include high level of detail with bows, lace, fabric manipulation and a range of different fabric print designs. She takes a lot of inspiration from different parts of nature like mushrooms and makes variations of designs and colour pallets that fit different aesthetics.
Lucy and Yak is a brand I have loved for a while. They are very relevant with the younger generation and cater to everyone. They aren't afraid to let current social issues reflect in their clothing, a good example is the #baringallcampaign.- and to me that's what fashion is all about.
A couple of other brands I really like are Oliver Bonas, Shop Little Lies and Converse.
* What is your first memory linked to fashion?
I was obsessed with playing with Bratz Dolls when I was little and changing their outfits, and also really loved bridal shops.

* How does sustainability and responsible or considered design influence your work?
I always try to upcycle and restore items of clothing and accessories so that they can live on a bit longer. Most of my wardrobe is rummage items, hand-me-downs and/or second hand. While I am reluctant to use it, fast fashion clothing is a last resort if I am after something specific.

* What was the last exhibition you visited?
Weston College Student Summer Show 2023.
* Tell us something about yourself we do not already know from your UCAS form or looking at your portfolio:
I am a massive fan of porcelain, specifically the Willow china pattern design. I always have been since I was a little girl. I think if I were to be an object, I’d be a porcelain figure. I also love National Trust places and often like to take my dogs Teddi and Dude on the grounds of Tyntesfield. This is the best form of therapy for me. Something about that place really speaks to me.
